Passersby reported a noticeable steam on the Market Square around 21:50. Upon closer inspection, they noticed that a hydrant had burst. The hydrant was set up for the Christmas market on the square. Uncontrollably, water was spraying out from the hydrant. Due to the strong frost, the water outburst created a mirror-like road surface in the area of the Market Square and parts of Lindenstraße.
The passersby alerted the firefighters at the station house, who were there after their weekly drill.
Two firefighters ventured into the water fountain and quickly shut off the water supply with a hydrant key. Meanwhile, the fire department secured the slippery hazardous area. Afterwards, the municipal works department spread the area extensively.
The police and the city utilities provided support during the operation.
