Luxembourg shows how modern financial education can work – Saarland must now follow suit
While Luxembourg is expanding financial education in the education system with a national action plan in a binding manner, Saarland still lacks a coherent overall concept. For this reason, the FDP Saar is calling for a binding financial competence framework for all types of schools.
“Luxembourg demonstrates what modern education policy must achieve: Financial education is understood there as a key competence for a self-determined life and is systematically integrated into teaching. That is exactly the standard we need in Saarland as well,” explains Gudrun Bierbrauer-Haupenthal, deputy state chairwoman of the FDP Saar.
According to the Free Democrats, it is not sufficient to distribute financial education across individual subjects or voluntary projects. Every young person must leave school with the skills to understand contracts, prepare a household budget, evaluate loans, recognize financial risks, and responsibly plan for their own future.
“Those who expect young people to take personal responsibility must, of course, also enable them to do so. Financial education is not specialized knowledge for a few but part of general education,” says Bierbrauer-Haupenthal.
For this reason, the FDP Saar calls for a binding financial competence framework for all types of schools, clearly defined teaching portions within existing subjects, as well as a practical “Financial Driver’s License Saarland” at the end of secondary level I. Real-life topics such as household planning, taxes, insurance, investment, consumer rights, digital financial services, and over-indebtedness prevention should be treated in a binding manner.
“The best consumer protection is not always a new law. The best consumer protection is the informed citizen. Our goal is not a state that dictates financial decisions, but people who can make good decisions themselves. More financial competence means more personal responsibility and thus more freedom,” emphasizes Bierbrauer-Haupenthal in conclusion.
Therefore, the FDP Saar will include the binding strengthening of financial education as a central educational political goal in its government program for the 2027 state election.
