District town
Homburg
Following the press release of 23.06.2026, the following is to be reported on the current status of the tax matter:
1.
In the meantime, two tax criminal investigation proceedings are being conducted by the competent investigative authorities. These concern – as already reported – the mayor personally and ultimately also the city of Homburg as such. In both proceedings, a defense attorney has been appointed and has specifically requested access to the files. The files have not yet been available.
2.
The responsible tax authorities have conducted audits at the city of Homburg in the past period and will also conduct further audits. On the part of the city, all audits and other measures are being cooperatively supported. The subject matter concerns value-added tax issues for the period 2019 to 2024. On the one hand, this concerns outstanding tax returns taking into account already available tax assessment notices for the tax years from 2019 onwards. On the other hand, it concerns complex substantive issues regarding value-added tax.
The necessary processing, which has already begun promptly, is being carried out by a correspondingly commissioned tax consulting firm; but also with legal support.
3.
Based on the audits conducted, the responsible tax authority has currently, at the end of June 2026, issued a tax assessment notice (subject to review). Taking into account significant payments already made by the city of Homburg in the past, a payment amount of approximately €179,000 remains for value-added tax. In coordination with the tax administration, this amount will initially be made available. However, due to disputed content, an objection against the notice will be filed by the tax consultancy.
The city of Homburg is keen to resolve the tax law issues that have arisen in agreement with the responsible tax authorities. The same applies to any tax criminal law aspects.
4.
Overall, understanding is requested that in tax matters, weighing all relevant legal aspects, comprehensive information cannot be provided.
